What is the best time of year for gorilla trekking in Uganda?
Gorilla trekking runs year-round in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The driest months — December to February and June to September — have the easiest, least muddy trails. Uganda’s two wetter spells, April-May and November, bring fewer visitors, better permit availability, and discounted low-season permit pricing.
How much does a Uganda gorilla permit cost?
Standard gorilla trekking permits cost $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens during peak season, dropping to around $600 / $500 in the low season (April, May and November). The gorilla habituation experience costs $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents and UGX 750,000 for East African citizens. These are current Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rates, are set by UWA and can change without notice, and we always confirm the exact price with you before you pay.
How far in advance should I book my permit?
We recommend booking 3 to 6 months ahead, and up to a year ahead for travel in the July-September and December-January peak weeks, since UWA issues only a limited number of permits per park per day and popular dates sell out.
Is my permit guaranteed once I send an enquiry?
Not until it is paid for. We check live UWA availability for your preferred date and two alternative dates, confirm the exact price and availability with you, and secure the permit in your name once payment is received. All permits remain subject to availability until then.
What happens if we don’t see gorillas on our trek?
UWA ranger-guides find a habituated gorilla family on well over 95% of treks. On the rare occasion a group does not see gorillas, UWA policy allows for a complimentary re-trek voucher, and we help you apply for it.
What’s the difference between gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation?
Standard trekking gives you one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family. The gorilla habituation experience, available only in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector, lets you spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still being habituated to human presence, alongside researchers and trackers.
Can I trek in Mgahinga instead of Bwindi?
Yes. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has its own habituated gorilla family and uses the same UWA permit pricing as Bwindi. We can book either park depending on availability and your itinerary.
How do I pay, and can I get a refund or reschedule?
Once we confirm your permit and price, we send secure payment instructions. Permits are non-refundable once purchased from UWA on your behalf, but date changes may be possible before the permit is purchased, subject to availability. See our Payment & Refund Policy for full details.
